Arieann Harrison speaking at From Bhopal to the Bay — Oakland, California, US
Arieann Harrison: “I’m a sixth-generation resident of Bayview Hunters Point District 10. Part of our story is… redlining,… racism,… and being isolated to the southeast sector of San Francisco. My family migrated from the south to District 10 for work.”
Arieann Harrison spoke as a panelist at the public educational panel of the From Bhopal to the Bay event in Oakland, California, US, organized collaboratively by Ecosymbionts Regenerate and ASATA on 25 September, 2024. Ms. Harrison was responding to the following question. The globally institutionalized corporate extractivist system (“Extractivist System”) results in widespread ecocide and inequity, thus having many different harmful effects. What effects does the Extractivist System have on your organization or community? And what methods do you use to counteract these effects?
Arieann Harrison is the Founder and Executive Director of the Marie Harrison Community Foundation. She is a resident of District 10 of San Francisco, California, US, and has lived and worked in the Bayview Community for over 30 years. Her work includes providing social services, employment opportunities, community resources, and engaging in environmental advocacy with local District 10 residents, taking an all-inclusive, solutions-based approach to providing good information for the best outcome that will lead to preservation of life. ‘CanWeLive’ has become the rallying cry of a community that has been long overlooked when it comes to social, environmental, and economic justice.
Named after the late environmental justice activist Marie Harrison, the Foundation fights to demand a cleanup of the radioactive waste at San Francisco’s Hunters Point Shipyard. They also benefit impacted communities through environmental justice initiatives, community outreach, and housing and job resources.
