Inner and Outer Regeneration and the Global Ecovillage Network (1 of 5)

Amena Bal talks about the importance of inner and outer regeneration, understanding the deep ecology of things, building in earth-care and people-care into ecovillages, and the importance of connecting with self and others through language and silence.

In this five-part interview, Amena Bal talks to Kakoli Mitra about the vital connection between inner and outer regeneration and how, as a member of the Global Ecovillage Network (GEN), she incorporates this understanding into her work in scaling ecovillages. GEN is a network of united communities across many regions of the world. Amena explains that an ecovillage is an intention and a shared purpose, moving from boundaries to belonging, from separation into unity and diversity. And that regeneration is, first, the slowing down and remembering that everything is interconnected and, second, the reconnecting with reciprocity in all aspects. Amena and Kakoli discuss the significance of words and language in thinking and speaking about regenerative concepts and how essential the diversity of human ideas, strengths, weaknesses, and skill sets is in ensuring regeneration of ourselves and our planet. Amena concludes by saying: “Rest is such an important ingredient for regeneration. And in this modern world, the time is running so fast, and people are just thinking that there’s somewhere to reach. But coming back to this idea of eternal time, there’s actually nowhere to reach. It’s just this moment. And if this moment is regenerative, then the work is done.”

author Rooted in Soil and Soul, Amena Bal (she) weaves a grassroots to global tapestry of regeneration, living life as a prayer of healing self and others, birthing communities of care, embodying feminine wisdom to regenerate: one breath, one seed, now.
