EcoResilience: Strengthening Economic and Ecosymbiotic Resilience to Ensure Survival (2 of 2)

To solve the ecosocial challenges of ecocide and inequity plaguing most of our world, we must urgently replace the action principle of corporate extractivism with the alternative action principle of collaborative regeneration that has the goal of strengthening EcoResilience.

What is EcoResilience?

EcoResilience is the inherent power of an autonomous human community and the ecological web (ecoweb[1]) it inhabits to recover from and intelligently and creatively adapt to change and adversity through ecosymbiotic self-reliance and expression of the community's ecoweb-rooted identity and Knowledge-Technologies-Practices (Knowtep[2]).

In the context of living beings, resilience is the inherent ability of an autonomous complex system to recover from and intelligently and creatively adapt to change, requiring the system to comprise (i) diverse functioning components that are interconnected and interdependent, (ii) redundancy in components, (iii) built-in mechanisms to modify components, and (iv) feedback loops that modulate the functioning and interplay of components.

EcoResilience encompasses both the economic resilience and ecosymbiotic resilience[3] of an ecoweb inhabited by an autonomous human community.

A human community has economic resilience when members are autonomously able to collaboratively and regeneratively produce the Commodities and Services (C/S) they require to meet all five types of their basic needs from the resources of the ecoweb they inhabit (ecosymbiotic self-reliance[4]) because (a) they have developed local ecology-rooted Knowtep that they can intelligently and creatively use to regeneratively adapt to changes, (b) they have stewardship of the ecoweb they inhabit and the resources therein, and (c) their survival (optimized by self-reliantly meeting basic needs) is relatively independent of distal geopolitical manipulations of currencies, supply chains, prices, and markets.

Ecosymbiotic resilience is the ability of an ecoweb (of which a human community is a part) to tolerate (adapt itself to) a disturbance (adverse condition) and restore itself to (a new) equilibrium and is predicated on the ecoweb’s being healthy and biodiverse, so that a multitude of different organisms (including humans) can intelligently and creatively mediate physiological (biochemical and genetic) adaptation to change through Adaptation Feedback Loops.

Every living being has evolved ecosymbiotically, meaning that each evolved to benefit in some way the ecoweb it inhabits in exchange for other benefits from its ecoweb, the complex living system of which it is a functioning part. Thus, all living beings actively, intelligently, and creatively contributing to and participating in this autonomous, collaborative, self-reliant, and resilient system enjoy dignity, for each being has value to and within the system.

In the context of humans, resilience can develop and remain strong only when both physiological vitality (requiring nutritious food, effective healthcare, and Knowtep promoting wellbeing) and psychological vitality (which necessitates being treated and treating others with dignity and being able to express the intelligence and creativity that optimizes interconnected (ecosymbiotic) wellbeing) exist within a community and its members.

Decimating a human population’s ability to act on its intelligence, creativity, and strong evolutionary imperative to be autonomous and self-reliant breaks that population physiologically and psychologically, thus greatly diminishing its resilience. A physiologically and psychologically beleaguered population with greatly attenuated resilience is a captive and desperate population that can be readily exploited for profit-making. This is why extractivist actors are motivated to destroy the inherent intelligence, creativity, self-reliance, and resilience of human beings (see [5]).

Transitioning from Corporate Extractivism to Collaborative Regeneration

Simply put, to solve the ecosocial challenges of ecocide (resulting in e.g., climate change, biodiversity loss) and inequity (injustice, poverty, disenfranchisement, identity loss, hunger, violence) plaguing most of our world’s living beings, we need to create conditions that sever people and planet from the control and manipulation of extractivist actors, so that living beings can regain their autonomy to be self-reliant and resilient. In other words, we need to urgently replace the action principle of corporate extractivism with the alternative action principle of collaborative regeneration that, instead of depleting and destroying, nurtures the autonomous intelligence and creativity of humans and ecowebs, in particular, through strengthening their EcoResilience.

Understanding how to create programmatic, policy, and implementation strategies to transition to collaborative regeneration (in particular, through strengthening EcoResilience) necessitates first undergoing a step-by-step unlearning-relearning process comprising five modules. These modules are based on the FiveBecomings (Pañchabhūmi)[6] framework:

Module 1 (earth): Context/Differentiation
Elucidate the various factors giving rise to and perpetuating the ecosocial challenge(s) being tackled (Inducing Factors)

Module 2 (water): Interconnectivity/Cohesion
Expand the sphere of cause and effect to comprehend interconnectivities between Inducing Factors

Module 3 (fire): Transformation
Evaluate existing system(s) creating Inducing Factors, alternate system(s) dissipating Inducing Factors, and mechanisms to transition from the former to the latter system(s)

Module 4 (air): Movement/Agitation (through time and space)
Understand the inseverable links between human wellbeing and ecological wellbeing and how Inducing Factors affect this interconnected wellbeing

Module 5 (ākāś): Potential
Explore how to optimize the potential of humans and ecologies to be EcoResilient, enabling them to self-reliantly solve ecosocial challenges (including poverty, food insecurity, pollution, ill-health, climate change, biodiversity loss, water scarcity, inequity, disenfranchisement, and violence)
