Greens, Grit, and Grooves in the Lower Bottoms
James Bell, a native of West Oakland, California, US (also known as the Lower Bottoms), talks about what inspires his special brand of music: eating healthy, cooperative ethics, and life. He shares two tracks about black identity and eating nutritiously.
James Bell speaks to Kakoli Mitra about what inspires his music, being an advocate of healthy eating and a native of West Oakland, California, United States (also known as the Lower Bottoms). In his music, James talks about real life as a ‘melanated’ man, while trying to stay away from dwelling on negative experiences and portrayals, something that is commonly done about West Oakland. One of James’ projects is to spread the word about health, nutrition, and identity through his music that is influenced by hip hop, jazz, and other musical innovations native to the Lower Bottoms. James plays and performs one of his songs called ‘Ayers’ and another one called ‘Heaven,’ which was the result of a collaboration with his friend Benny Gerard.
