Chef Green: Revitalizing the Food Scene in West Oakland

Chef Green talks about how he’s helping to revitalize the food scene in West Oakland through his own blended culinary style, including tacos and fried fish, which draws clients from across the San Francisco Bay Area (California, United States).

Chef Green (Dione Green), the proprietor of a street corner food stall, talks to Kakoli Mitra about how he’s helping to revitalize the food scene in his neighborhood, West Oakland (California, United States), which is not only a food desert (little or no availability of fresh produce) but also does not offer a lot of options for freshly cooked prepared foods. Chef Green offers a rotating menu to his customers, who come from across the San Francisco Bay Area to eat his cooking. He learned to cook from his grandmother and his mother, then onto culinary school, and worked for a catering company, which gave him the opportunity to learn and cook in many different places. His cuisine is his own, but inspired by different culinary types. “This brother black, and he’s making pretty good tacos,” opine many of his customers. Says Chef Green, “It’s not a race card; good food is good food… no matter who’s cooking.”
